Exterior Trim:

Building Traditional Window Casing From Cellular PVC

After installing this new-construction window, I made the exterior trim from Azek cellular PVC instead of wood. No problems with paint peeling or water damage.

Building Traditional Window Trim From Wood

To revive this old garage, we installed some new windows. But the nailing flanges had to go over the existing wood siding, so we applied some simple wood trim to conceal the nailing flanges.

Installing Exterior Trim Around A New Patio Door

On this project we were able to cut away the wood siding to make a "trough" for the 1x4 door casing.

Installing A Steel Entry Door With Custom PVC Trim

Instead of keeping the original brickmold trim, I applied 1x4 trim made from cellular PVC, and then installed the door.

Building Traditional Water Table Trim With Cellular PVC Lumber

While replacing the siding, we decided to rebuild the "water table" trim with low-maintenance PVC trimboards.

Vinyl Siding:

Replacing A Single Panel Of Vinyl Siding

When a section of vinyl siding gets cracked or broken, it's easy to replace the bad piece... if you can find new siding that matched the original color.

Fixing A Water Leak Where The Roof Meets Vinyl Siding

This fairly new house had a water leak in the basement during or after a heavy rainstorm. It turned out the problem was behind the vinyl siding.

Installing A Vinyl Siding J-Block For An Electrical Outlet

The best way to install vinyl siding around an electrical box is to install a vinyl J-block, which conceals and retains the cut edges of the siding.

Installing Vinyl Shutters

Vinyl shutters are easy to install, if there is something sturdy for the fasteners to grab onto.

Wood Siding:

Installing Tongue-And-Groove Wood Siding

While remodeling this garage, we needed new wood siding to fill in some new sections of wall beside the garage door.

Replacing A Single Piece Of Hardboard Siding

One piece of Masonite siding had some rot damage, so I simply replaced it by prying out some nails and fastening the new siding in place.

Fixing A Rotted Wood Window Sill

While painting the house I discovered some soft and rotten wood on a window sill, so I cut our the bad wood and installed a new custom-cut window sill.

Repairing Shallow Rot Damage In
Solid Wood Siding

When the redwood siding on this garage had a rotten patch that wasn't very deep, I decided to try filling the bad area with a thin strip of wood and some putty.

Trim Carpentry Details For A
Window Air Conditioner Wall Opening

Instead of filling up the room's only window with an air conditioner, I made a clean opening in the wall for the A/C.

Also: A custom cover for wintertime.

Fiber Cement Siding Project:

Replacing Wood Siding With HardiPlankĀ®
Fiber Cement Siding:

- An Overview -

Replacing the old wood siding wasn't the question... the issue was what type of new siding to use.

New wood siding is authentic but expensive and requires frequent maintenance. Vinyl siding was out of the question. Fiber cement siding gave us the clean lines of real wood without the hassle and expense of repainting every 5 to 8 years.

Part 1 -
Removing Old Wood Siding

To provide a clean, smooth base for foam insulation and new siding, we removed all the old wood clapboards.

Part 2 -
Wall Prep For New Fiber Cement Siding

When changing exterior siding, there is an opportunity to add more insulation. We added 1/2 inch thick rigid foam, which barely changed the thickness of the wall.

Part 3 -
Building Traditional Water Table Trim With Cellular PVC Lumber

While replacing the siding, we decided to rebuild the "water table" trim with low-maintenance PVC trimboards.

Part 4 -
Installing Fiber Cement Siding

HardiPlankĀ® fiber cement siding goes up quickly when fastened with a coil roofing nail gun. We cut the siding with a special dust-collecting saw, but other tools also work well.

We even cut boards with a special wavy pattern to match the century-old original siding design.
